We are looking forward to a book discussion as one of our evening activities. Please join us in a relaxed time of gathering to share our thoughts and discoveries together after reading Jane Austen’s 19th century novel Persuasion. Published in 1817, but dated 1818, this was Austen’s last completed novel. After years apart, unmarried Anne Elliot encounters the dashing naval officer others persuaded her to reject (Bantam Classics 1989). Thrown together because of Anne’s family’s circumstances, she and Captain Wentworth become reacquainted with him now regarded as a man of status and fortune. Amid the developing plans of others, and social life in the country and in Bath, Anne and Captain Wentworth are tried in situations humorous and poignant as to each of their responses to the past. I invite you to enter that world by reading this novel in time for our retreat and then join in our conversation together.
As you read the novel, consider keeping a Commonplace book to record the passages and dialogue that spark your interest, enjoyment, and reflection.
